Updated information on Avian Influenza Prevention Zone
Updated information on the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone
**In response to the continued, heightened risk of H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza, the existing Avian Influenza Prevention Zones will remain in force until 30th April. The extension of this order is a precautionary measure to help prevent infection from wild birds.**
What does it mean to your visit to our Centres?
You are welcome to visit, we are taking precautions for our Poultry and Wild Birds, but this shouldn’t affect your enjoyment of the centre.
Following the announcement in December of a Prevention Zone by Defra for 30 days until 6th January 2017, and the subsequent extension to the 30th April 2017. Margaret Green Animal Rescue MGAR instigated protocols to protect their Poultry and Captive birds and keep them separate from wild birds.
The zones mean that we activated our biosecurity procedures which involve a number of actions including:
- Where necessary poultry and captive birds being moved to the most appropriate area on site
- Covers on water and feeding areas where suitable
- Minimising direct and indirect contact with wild birds
- Taking all reasonable precautions to avoid the transfer of contamination on site
In addition to this, re-homing of our Poultry or Captive Birds will remain on hold until the Prevention Zone is lifted
If you would like to know more about the Prevention Zone which has been placed by DEFRA, there is information in our Visitor Centre at Church Knowle or you can look at the website for the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs
